Chapter 30 in Structural Change, Economic Interdependence and World Development, 1987, pp 427-437 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The growing importance for each national economy of international relations and world markets is universally recognised. The influence of international relations has become especially apparent during the last twenty-five years. In the middle of the 1950s about 9 per cent of the aggregate gross national product of the world was going through the channels of world trade. By the beginning of the 1980s this figure was already over 15 per cent. As a consequence, there was an intensification of interdependence and co-operation between different national economies. Governments and international organisations were increasingly faced with the necessity of considering the changes occurring in the international sphere.
