Abstract: Abstract This paper1 traces the intellectual lineage, empirical relevance and practical implications of a ‘New Approach’ which places consumer spending at the centre of macroeconomic policies for maintaining full employment in an economy that is technologically progressive and experiencing a continual rise in per capita incomes.
