Abstract:
Abstract The problem with which we are concerned in this paper is the relationship between technological change and structural change. The historical record shows new technology to be of central importance in the history of modern industrial nations, and yet this same phenomenon has proved resilient to attempts to incorporate it within formal economic theory. Our purpose is to develop a framework for the integration of technical change into the economic analysis of structural growth and development. In particular we wish to understand the forces which determine the growth rate of an industry and how these forces change over time in a systematic way.
