Abstract:
Abstract Our general concern will be the relations between inflation, productivity and unemployment in developed economies. Rather than providing solutions, we shall consider a somewhat unconventional way of looking at and analysing a class of problems. Providing solutions or clear-cut explanations to these problems would require a set of stylised facts that make up the problems. However, these do not exist. It should also be kept in mind that the ideas to be presented and the analytical techniques that they suggest are not sufficiently encompassing to consider all aspects of the problem. While these matters are usually considered on a macro basis, the aspects we will focus on can best be seen from a microeconomic viewpoint — indeed we could argue that what is involved is really a ‘micro-micro’ approach.1 Since we limit ourselves to micro aspects we can only suggest a partial probe into the area but one which we believe is significant in seeing the problem in its proper light.
