Policy Futures That Leverage the Strength of Informal Economy: Opportunities to Advance Circular Economy and UN SDGs

T. S. Krishnan ()

Chapter Chapter 5 in Untapped Knowledge in India’s E-Waste Industry, 2023, pp 79-99 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Policies that intentionally leverage the inherent capabilities of the informal processors and seek alignment with the way the e-waste industry is structured are more likely to succeed. This chapter proposes e-waste policy futures that leverage the strengths of informal processors by unlocking their potential and simultaneously mitigating negative health and environmental effects. The barrier to these policy futures has more to do with the systemic biases that have disenfranchised informal processors than with logistical challenges. By reframing the problem to understand the context of India’s e-waste industry on a holistic level, the proposed policy futures accelerate the transition to achieving a fuller circular economy and sustainable development goals.
