Help or Hindrance? ICT’s Impact on the Environment

Chapter 7 in Development Connections, 2011, pp 213-244 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract How do information and communication technologies (ICTs) affect the environment? To what extent do they exacerbate environmental degradation, and to what extent can they mitigate it? Technological developments have led to seemingly boundless possibilities for consumption, as new ways to communicate have brought down the barriers of geographic distance and global trade has boomed. Unfortunately, these developments have not come without environmental costs, including depleted resources and polluted commons. Interestingly, the same ICTs that have fostered these developments may also create opportunities to alleviate pressing environmental challenges and promote sustainable growth.
