Abstract:
Abstract Broadly speaking, the more vehicles manufacturers have produced, the more deep-sea shipments there have been (Figure 3.1). It is the motor vehicle industry that brought the maritime car carrier trade into existence, ships being much more appropriate for the mass transportation of these goods than airplanes; it is also the car manufacturing industry and its customers that have determined where ships have sailed and under what conditions; and it is the particular nature of the motor vehicle as ocean cargo — that it can move around under its own power — that has led to an important feature of the modern car carrier’s distinctive ship design: the Ro-Ro handling system rather than a containerised one. In the last chapter we outlined some of the important developments that have taken place in the maritime industry generally. In this chapter, we consider developments with special reference to the car carrier sector.
