Attracting the Swarm

Chuck Brymer

Chapter Chapter 8 in The Nature of Marketing, 2009, pp 137-155 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Samuel Brennan knew how to get people to flock to him. Brennan, a newspaper publisher and religious leader in the frontier California of the 1800s, noticed that some of his church members were paying tithes in precious metal – powdered gold they had discovered working at a mill. So one day he went up and down the streets of San Francisco waving bottles of this powder and yelling, “Gold! Gold from the American River!” Before long, word had spread clear across the country, and thousands soon traveled great distances to descend on the area.
