New Economy and Efficiency among the Regions

Chapter 5 in Productivity, Efficiency and Economic Growth in China, 2008, pp 72-92 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In Chapter 4, the impact of the new economy on China’s economic growth using data at the national level was examined. This chapter extends the discussion to regional growth and disparities in China, using data at the provincial level. The role of ICT in propelling China’s regional growth is, however, very rarely discussed despite the country’s emergence as one of the world’s largest ICT markets. This chapter hence has two main objectives: (a) to estimate China’s regional ICT capital stock and (b) to examine the impact of ICT investment on technical efficiency in China’s regions.
