What is to be Done with Union Organising?

Gregor Gall

Chapter 1 in Union Revitalisation in Advanced Economies, 2009, pp 1-16 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract An official fringe meeting at the British Trade Union Congress (TUC) in 2008 was entitled ‘Building Stronger Unions: what more can we do to grow?’ The press release for the meeting, which saw platform speakers comprising senior employed union officers (EUOs) from three growing unions in Britain (National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), Public and Commercial Services’ Union (PCS) and Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW)), the TUC Organising Academy Director and the AFL-CIO Executive Vice-President, lamented that: Ten years on from the launch of the TUC Organising Academy, unions find themselves at a crossroads. Over the last decade membership has stabilised, and unions have signed over 3,000 new agreements with employers, but union density is still falling. This [meeting] will ask what more can unions do to grow? How can we put reps and activists at the heart of our organising strategies? How can we step up our organising efforts and reach out to the next generation of union members and activists?
