Abstract: Abstract There are lots of charming euphemisms for alcoholic drinks. Fancy a snort, or a snifter, or cocktails at the club? Sir Denis Thatcher had a long list of euphemisms for drinks, apparently based on the amount and the time of day. You had openers, brighteners, and lifters; snifters, snorts, snorters, and snorterinos. This was someone who discriminated between the hour and the volume: the essential social function of a drink.
