A chapter in People Management in Turbulent Times, 2009, pp 110-111 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract What is the real nature of PR? Why do companies employ PR consultants or even have them as permanent members of staff? Certainly there are some pretty negative stereotypes. PR people are a heady mix of leggy blondes, called (by decree) Amanda or Caroline, and dodgy ex-car dealer types with the gift of the gab. They are flashy, fashionable dressers; but are they egocentric spendthrifts and profligate wasters of shareholder capital?
