Abstract: Abstract This chapter is written at an introductory level and serves to contextualize issues that emerge later on in the contributed chapters. We have four tasks facing us. We begin with a purview of the concept of unpaid work so as to clarify terms used in this book, such as paid and unpaid work, system of national accounts (SNA) and non-SNA work and so on. We move then to establish some important linkages between unpaid work and the economy. Beyond an explication of intrahousehold inequalities, we point out some of the interconnections between unpaid work taking place within the institutional setting of the household and the institutions of the market and the state. Next, we turn to TUS data, as they are the primary tool for acknowledging and measuring unpaid work. Finally, we put forward some dimensions of unpaid work that are of specific importance in the context of development strategies for countries of the Global South.
