Abstract: Abstract The global financial crisis of late 2007, 2008 and into 2009, made a dent in China’s much-vaunted export earnings and international trade surplus. But it has also provided the spur for China to encourage the growth of its domestic market and to stimulate consumer demand. In truth, this is the real focus for China. It may be first in the world for production of commodities and consumer goods, from cement to tea, but is in the bottom third of the world for income per head of population. This creates a dilemma for Western economists — is China a developed or a developing country? Which set of fanciful definitions and mathematical models can be applied to fathom Chinese progress? In short, none. China is developed along the Eastern and Southern seaboard but developing elsewhere. Western minds cannot handle mutually exclusive situations. China is too big and too diverse to fitneatly into the economic models’ premises and parametric boundaries.
