Hands to the Grindstone

Richard Donkin

Chapter Chapter 1 in The History of Work, 2010, pp 1-13 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Some years ago on a hike in the English Lake District with my two eldest sons, we struck out off the path to climb a scree slope on the southern side of Pike O’ Stickle, a conical peak near the head of the Langdale Valley. The steep slope is covered in shards of hard blue rock. Some of the pieces have distinctive chips down a narrow edge, signs that they were once worked by a human hand. These are the discards from a Stone Age axe quarry sited where the hard rock outcrops near the peak.
