Abstract: Abstract In evaluating Alfred Marshall as an economic theorist and his influence over economics it is crucial to recognize his methodological attitudes and vision for economics. Two strands of his perspective seem most relevant: his attitude toward controversy and his attitude toward truth (Collard, 1990). It is commonplace to regard Marshall as wary of public controversy, almost to the point of extreme timidity.1
