Chapter 13 in Rethinking Enterprise Policy, 2010, pp 214-222 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The earlier parts of this book have suggested that much current enterprise and entrepreneurship policy is not working and that the models of entrepreneurship which are consistent with, and thus explain, that policy are, at least to some extent, based on myth. After looking at entrepreneurship from a number of different perspectives, it is suggested that enterprise is essentially a goal realisation device and so entrepreneurship is, and should be seen as, one of a number of possible options available to people that help them to realise their life goals. This book also suggests that many people, in choosing between the options they perceive, will be influenced much more by social pressures that by any individual, logical, risk–benefit analysis.
