Chapter Chapter 1 in Working in Adversarial Relationships, 2011, pp 1-16 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Let’s begin this book by considering what an ‘adversarial working relationship’ means. We will define the term and explore some of the characteristics of an adversarial workplace relationship. We will examine the specific dynamics that might be involved in a working relationship that is adversarial, and describe what issues these dynamics might create for those of you who get caught up in a relationship best characterized by low levels of trust, low levels of support, and some degree of opposition. We will also examine your own experiences of working within these kinds of relationships and illustrate the characteristics of adversarial working relationships using a number of realistic examples.
