Banking: Is Bigger Really Better?
Jean-Pierre Danthine
Chapter 22 in Financial Intermediation in the 21st Century, 2001, pp 209-219 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract On both sides of the Atlantic the banking industry has undergone two decades of spectacular transformation and the consolidation process does not seem to be slowing down, particularly in Europe. For academics, sceptical by profession, the trend towards ever bigger banking institutions is puzzling as in their studies they can find no confirmation of the rhetoric adopted by practitioners and consultants to justify their actions or rationalise their strategies. In this chapter we review the arguments and counter arguments.
