Abstract:
Abstract Grace Hooper, the creator of the business programming language COBOL, once said that ‘Life was simple before World War II. After that, we had systems.’ The Second World War was noteworthy not only for the scale of this conflict; it was also an incubator for a whole range of innovations in ‘systems’ that have affected human societies across the world up to the present day.
