An Almost Empire

Colin Read

Chapter 24 in The Rise and Fall of an Economic Empire, 2010, pp 216-219 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract If one attempting were to predict the next economic empire just a few decades ago, most all indicators pointed to Japan. Paul Kennedy in his book entitled the The Rise and Fall of Great Powers, published in 1980, documents the military history of empires to date. In this highly recommended book, Kennedy noted that Japan was in its ascendancy.109 Yet, Japan was overtaken by China in December of 2009 as the world’s second largest economy. What happened to Japan’s ascendancy then?
