Chapter 2.1 in The Innovation for Development Report 2010–2011, 2011, pp 67-83 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Over the last fifteen years, the concept of social entrepreneurship has captured the imagination and interest of public, corporate and civic leaders worldwide. While social entrepreneurs have existed since people came together to form communities, the current focus on applying entrepreneurial thinking to achieve social transformation has come of age, driven in large part by the shortcomings of governments, markets, and charitable organizations to devise innovative, sustainable, and scalable solutions to increasingly complex societal challenges.
