Chapter Chapter 7 in The Female Leadership Paradox, 2011, pp 60-87 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Power is an integral part of our society and the organizations operating in it. The word ‘power’ is indissolubly connected to the concept of leadership. Power can be defined as having influence or right of say over others, over valuable resources (financial and human) or over certain decisions. The word ‘power’ often evokes negative associations when it is equated with authoritative behavior, abuse, and other negative processes in organizations, for instance pushing through controversial decisions and bullying. The ability to build and use a power base is one of the most important competencies in leadership development for women. Overcoming the initial resistance and even accepting the exercise of power as an essential tool of a leader requires increased awareness and specific training during the career.
