My Version of Events: The Future

Jonathan Wheeldon

Chapter 15 in Patrons, Curators, Inventors and Thieves, 2014, pp 234-244 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The first three parts of this book analysed recorded music industry discourse. Part IV has been more about the discourse of knowledge production and protection, mainly because the history and the stories of ‘new’ technology, law and change in the much older print industry have so many insights to offer the younger recording industry. Having worked in both industries I find it difficult to separate them, especially as regards the way they are now affected by the same competing stories which will influence their future. I make no claim to be able to predict the future of cultural production any better than the next person, and I think speculating on the future is actually less valuable than analysing the past, but I will in this final chapter offer some brief views based on a distillation of my experience and intuitions. I am calling this ‘my version of events’ because I feel that analysis of the cultural industries will for a long time yet (and perhaps will always) lack the kind of robust empirical data on which to claim any kind of objective reliable predictions. My view is, therefore, just another tale.
