Equality in the Public Sector: The Sky Darkens

Susan Corby

Chapter 6 in Working for the State, 2011, pp 108-125 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract According to the Oxford Thesaurus, synonyms for equality are parity or sameness, but the question is parity or sameness with whom. Equality has many dimensions, but parity/differentials in respect of pay are dealt with in Chapter 5, in this volume. This chapter focuses on the six legally protected grounds: gender, race/ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief and age. Inevitably, however, the main focus is on gender and race/ethnicity as these two grounds have been legally protected for over 30 years, whereas the four other grounds are relative newcomers.
