Abstract:
Abstract A challenging assignment early in a woman’s career is particularly important. Not only does it allow her to be noted as a potential future leader, it also allows the woman to build up her confidence, which is one of the most important elements of ongoing career success. Being completely out of one’s depth technically, building credibility with established experts, taking on significant responsibility and working with the senior management team are some of the defining characteristics of early stretch assignments. They are often encountered as part of smaller, under-resourced organizations or departments at times of high demand where it is an ‘all hands to the pump’ situation and a young woman gets opportunities which go far beyond her level of experience.
