Dignity and Autonomy at Work
Jan Ch. Karlsson
Chapter 1 in Organizational Misbehaviour in the Workplace, 2012, pp 3-18 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract People need dignity and autonomy at work. If we are denied dignity and autonomy, there will be a strong tendency for us to resist our working conditions and misbehave at work. The bulk of this book is made up of stories or narratives on this theme (Part II). In this chapter, I introduce the theme by discussing dignity in relation to some problems that employers experience when organizing work, as well as some of the consequences that follow on from the tendency to organizationally misbehave, that is to break organizational rules. Following the narratives in Part II, I suggest a new way of conceptually analysing these phenomena (Part III).
