The Boiler Struggle

Jan Ch. Karlsson

Chapter 16 in Organizational Misbehaviour in the Workplace, 2012, pp 57-58 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In the factory, sulphate cellulose was boiled. Enormous boilers were filled with wood chips, chemicals and steam. The mixture was boiled for about four hours into pulp, whereupon the boiler was emptied, cleaned and filled again. The greatest work efforts were required when the boil was started and when the boiler was emptied. Between those tasks, it was fairly calm — or, more correctly, it would have been fairly calm if there had been only one boiler. However, there were three. So, during the time the boil was running in boiler number 1, a new boil was started in number 2, and while that was running, another one was started in number 3. Thus, the calm periods were neither very long nor frequent. The workers thought that three was the maximum possible number of boilers that they could handle.
