Monitoring Creative Employees

Jan Ch. Karlsson

Chapter 61 in Organizational Misbehaviour in the Workplace, 2012, pp 139-139 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract An American phone company secretly installed equipment to monitor work, but the employees found out. Soon, management noticed that it was not getting the information it had expected — the employees had created ways of manipulating the monitoring system. One manager commented: I cannot begin to tell you about the agitation that was caused, or the creativity which went into beating the system. You got to love folks for that kind of ingenuity. We had one heck of a protest. It came from the hurt. That’s what made them so sad and angry: feeling that they were being shut out and spied upon, with no say-so whatsoever, because they couldn’t be trusted. (89)
