Chapter 9 in The Spanish financial System, 2012, pp 311-346 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter sets out to analyze the relationships between integration, competition and financial stability in the Spanish banking sector since 1975. Rather than seek to provide concrete answers, the aim is to explore and open up a debate on a recent period of Spanish economic history full of profound changes affecting a sector which is crucial to economic development. As explained in detail in Chapter 7, credit institutions used to be subject to rigid structural regulation. Historically, bankers have not been free to make their own decisions about prices (interest rates and fees for providing banking services), quantities (amounts of credit to grant, sectors to finance, businesses in which to invest) or productive capacity (numbers of branches and their geographical location).
