Abstract: Abstract In the 1953 smash Broadway musical, Wonderful Town, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, the two main characters, Ruth and Eileen, leave Columbus, Ohio, for the big city of New York in pursuit of excitement and establishing new careers. At one point, they lament in the song ‘Ohio’, made famous by Rosalind Russell and Edith Adams, why they ever left Ohio. Little did they know that in this same year, the Buckeye State, once at the forefront of business and industry, would enter a period of economic and political decline. Once touted as ‘The Heart of it All’, Ohio’s leadership has flailed, causing the state to tailspin into mediocrity.
