The Regulatory Framework for Investment: Where Are We Headed?

Karl P. Sauvant

Chapter 2 in Internationalization of Emerging Economies and Firms, 2012, pp 15-39 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract As Yair Aharoni (2010) has pointed out, ‘globalization compels almost all firms to organize all value-added activities in a global manner’. Globalization has, in no small measure, been driven by foreign direct investment (FDI). While world FDI flows averaged US$50 billion during the first half of the 1980s, they had reached US$2.1 trillion in 2007 (before declining, I would say temporarily, to US$1.1 trillion in 2009, on account of the financial crisis and recession) (UNCTAD, 2010) (Table 2.1).1
