Taking care and taking charge

A chapter in The Talented Manager, 2012, pp 213-215 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Want to take part in a fun study? See below the list below of typical, relevant, leadership behaviors: 1. Consulting: checking with others before making decisions and plans. 2. Delegating: authorizing others to have substantial responsibility. 3. Influencing upward: appealing to those at the top. 4. Inspiring: motivating others to greater commitment and enthusiasm. 5. Mentoring: facilitating skill development and career advancement. 6. Networking: developing and maintaining useful relationships. 7. Problem solving: analyzing, identifying and acting decisively to remove work impediments. 8. Rewarding: providing recognition, praise and remuneration for good work. 9. Supporting: assisting and encouraging others, and allocating resources to help. 10. Team building: encouraging cooperation and constructive conflict resolution. Now think of some senior managers in your organization. Thinking of the men first, what percentage of them demonstrate each of the leadership behaviors listed to a significant degree? And then do the same for the female managers — in the hope that you have enough of them to make a reasonable judgment.
