The Case for the Single Currency

Christopher Haskins

Chapter 10 in The Impact of the Euro, 2000, pp 163-168 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The creators of the European Union, originally called the European Economic Community, were determined to use it as the basis for a new European order. The Continent had been ravaged by two terrible wars in its lifetime and had been in almost continuous violent turmoil for centuries. The objective for the European Union was to create political stability, including the principle of some shared sovereignty between nations built on sustainable economic growth and a common market without barriers to trade.
