A chapter in Do World Bank and IMF Policies Work?, 1999, pp 190-194 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The main purpose of this book is to rely on evidence and to go beyond rhetoric, ideology and anecdotes in assessing structural adjustment (SA) in Pakistan. In a much-cited article, Huntington (1993, p. 39) stated that ‘Through the IMF and other international economic institutions, the West promotes its economic interests and imposes on other nations the economic policies it thinks appropriate.’ Such statements are enough to make even the most level headed of Third World thinkers paranoid.
