Abstract Just as railroads in the nineteenth century, and airlines in the twentieth century, helped to compress time, so too telecommunications are changing concepts of time as we near the twenty-first century. The integration of voice, video and data is transforming businesses in the fields of entertainment, retailing information and communication.
