Chapter 2 in Economics, Ethics and Religion, 1997, pp 22-67 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Judaism, as the oldest of the three major world religions originating in the Middle East, is the natural starting point for this investigation. Over 3000 years of Jewish history have provided a rich tradition of spiritual thinking and moral law on all aspects of human existence including the economic dimension. Christianity builds on the Old Testament teachings, and Muslims also recognise the prophets of the land of Israel, and take the teachings of Moses and Abraham (Ibrahim in Arabic) as precursors to the teaching of the prophet Mohammed. It seems appropriate, therefore, for an investigation into comparative religious writings on economic issues to begin at this common entry point.
