Why So Much Pain? (1998)

Richard Layard

Chapter 27 in Tackling Inequality, 1999, pp 494-503 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The collapse of European Communism is the most important world event since the end of the Second World War. At the same time the world’s largest country, China, has taken giant steps in the direction of capitalism. But both in Europe, China and Central Asia the transformation is only partly accomplished and it has not begun in Cuba. Sensible strategies for the future depend crucially on learning the right lessons from what has been done so far.
