Sraffa’s Prices

Chapter 2 in Sraffa or An Alternative Economics, 2008, pp 45-67 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In Chapter I of Piero Sraffa’s book Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities: Prelude to a Critique of Economic Theory (I960), entitled ‘Production for Subsistence’, the same production is repeated every period, each commodity produced separately by a single process, and everything produced is used up in producing what is produced (the elusive steady state sought by ecologists must be like this). The complete intelligibility is undone when prices are introduced; it is not said what purpose they serve, as if one should know. These are not prices in the ordinary sense of when a market transaction takes place.
