Existing Security Measures: An Audit

Adrian Beck and Andrew Willis

Chapter 5 in Crime and Security: Managing the Risk to Safe Shopping, 2006, pp 97-123 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract If the sensible first step in responding to crime and nuisance in the shopping environment was to acknowledge the size and scale of the problems (from the point of view of shoppers and managers), the next step is to conduct a ‘security audit’ of existing measures and practices. This provides a basis for thinking creatively about improvements in security strategies. Making comparisons of security cover for shoppers and managers in two retail environments is complex. The types of security measures being used in town centres and in shopping centres are not always directly comparable; and the public may not be aware of the technical aspects of some options. To minimise these difficulties and to permit comparative analysis the security options were compressed into four broad categories: police on patrol security guards on patrol closed circuit television (CCTV) ‘Watch’ schemes such as Business Watch, Pub Watch, City Watch, Retailers Against Crime, etc.
