The ‘Technology Factor’ in Sustainable Development
Ingunn Moser
Chapter 11 in Towards Sustainable Development, 1999, pp 193-212 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Increasingly the world is described as — and is becoming — dependent on modern science and technology. Yet, this is not fundamentally new. Science and technology have been central elements in the West’s cultural development and self-understanding for several centuries. Science and technology have played an active part in forming industrial society’s relationship with nature, other people and cultures. How does this relate to a growing recognition of the close links between global environmental and development crises, and modern Western life forms? What roles do modern science and technology play in the developments which have become critical — in social, cultural and natural environments?
