Abstract:
Abstract We began by suggesting that our central concern was to discuss the contribution made by government to the promotion of the international competitiveness of the pharmaceutical industry in the UK and Japan. Our analysis has highlighted three aspects of the government-industry relationship, three areas where it seems likely that government policy could make a difference to industrial performance: via prices, patent and science and technology policy. Within each of these areas there are four dynamic elements which are responsible for altering the nature of the industry’s relationship with government which we have labelled structure, governance, globalisation and innovation. In this final section we will try to bring together the themes of the preceding chapters to assess the dynamism of the industry in the two countries and the influence of government over the two industries.
