Chapter 1 in Public Sector Reformation, 2012, pp 1-21 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Following the end of World War II, Western politicians, aware of their predecessors’ failings after the 1914–18 war to deliver on the promise to ‘create a land fit for heroes’ and diminish the misery faced by millions following the 1930s Great Depression, recognised the urgent need for greater social equality. This understanding led to the creation of the welfare state which, in varying degrees in different countries, offered free or subsidised education and healthcare, unemployment benefits and pensions for the elderly.
