Abstract: Abstract Accompanying the Industrial Revolution was the launch of the first magazines and newspapers, which were seen as a socially acceptable alternative to reading books. As with books, however, the high cost of these publications and relatively low literacy rates restricted readership to the upper and middle-classes. In order to obtain information about news at a national and international level, the rest of society relied on word-of-mouth and having pamphlets read to them in public places such as inns and taverns.
