Chapter 1 in The Role of Business Ethics in Economic Performance, 1998, pp 1-20 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This volume has developed within the context of widespread concern about the ethical environment in which modern economic activity in advanced capitalist economies occurs. Firms, trade associations, individual consumers and investors and the politicians and regulators who oversee them have been increasingly required to justify their actions and decision-making processes not just on the conventional grounds of profitability within the law but on higher standards of business ethics, voluntary codes of conduct and the difficult-to-define concept of social responsibility.
