Chapter 1 in The Japanese Economy, 1997, pp 3-19 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter scans some of the highlights of Japan’s modern economic history. It does not purport to be anything other than a brief synopsis, for its major objective is simply to draw to the reader’s attention, the obvious fact, that the groundwork for current economic activity is embedded in the past. The narrative relating to the prewar era in particular, represents more of a list of landmark events than an attempt to provide a fully coherent account of the earlier stages of Japan’s economic development.
