Chapter 7 in The Japanese Economy, 1997, pp 136-154 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The quality of Japan’s human capital and the distinctive manner in which it is organized both go a long way in accounting for the tremendous economic success that the country has enjoyed. In a later chapter dealing with education, we show how Japan’s school and university systems mould its labour force. Here we concentrate on personnel management within the large corporation, working conditions and remuneration, trade unionism and other related issues such as the lot of temporary workers, female employees and the firm’s approach to staff when facing trying circumstances.
