Abstract: Abstract Within the global economy Japan is a leading player. In 1992 it was, after Germany and the USA, the third single largest exporter, dispatching 9.5 per cent of all internationally traded goods. As an importer, it ranked fourth, purchasing 6.1 per cent of world exports [World Bank Report 1994:187].
