Chapter Chapter 10 in Going South, 2012, pp 335-362 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract It was getting on for 5.30 in the afternoon when Geoff Hurst lashed in a shot from the edge of the penalty area at Wembley Stadium to seal England’s 4–2 victory over West Germany in the World Cup final. Never again has English football scaled the heights that it did on Saturday 30 July 1966 in North London; the story ever since has been one of supreme underachievement as other nations have exposed the limitations of the country that invented the ‘beautiful game’.
