Abstract:
Abstract It was 24 February 2003 and the Dutch nation was in shock. Royal (Koninklijke) Ahold, a household name and one of the pillars of the Dutch establishment, had just announced the discovery of a $500 million accounting fraud. The auditors were refusing to sign the accounts and Ahold had had to negotiate emergency financing with its banks to avoid immediate bankruptcy.
